Few months back my bank increased my credit limit by about 7 times
without any regard to my salary.. which probably had gone up by only 7 rupees!
I opted for it as I was attracted to the idea of getting a my card upgraded to platinum!
On after thought, it probably wasn't a great idea to a have credit limit that ran into lacs... and one fine day.. I decided to call up the bank and asked them to reduce the limit to at least 1 lac for now
(you can bet ur money on the fact that I checked that the card will still remain platinum!! :))
that was done promptly and I was told that it will get effected in a few hours
but being from a risk averse middle class background.. I asked for an official confirmation after the limit gets reduced. That i guess took the call center exec off guard and she suggested what appeared to be the most logical way..
"why don't u try making a transaction of over a lac and it will get rejected.. that will be the confirmation"
now that was as simple as "if its there, its there" but was still equally absurd
I mean.. why will I keep shopping for 1 lac.. just to test the bank's efficiency??
while I still like the very clear and simple underlying logic behind that answer.. the first thought that crossed my mind was... what will a poor guy like me shop for 1 lac plus...and if I even remotely intended to do that.. why would I have got the limit reduced!!
There was still one practical option left.. which was to walk with an air of superiority and a swollen chest. pose as a guy who has arrived in life and try to buy something in an international store for 1.5 lac or so, purely for "testing" purposes..that way.. I can test the card also and wouldn't have to spend anything..
this one sounds logical...
the only concern is ....what if the bank fails???
